PasswordAuthentication not working for SFTP

My company now has 2 web servers that I can’t log into via Dreamweaver MX 2004’s SFTP functionality. I’ve already read and re-read Macromedia’s technote on setting PasswordAuthentication to “yes” the sshd_conf file, but that doesn’t seem to be working. I can SFTP just fine via FileZilla to both servers, but when I try with Dreamweaver the logs tell me that the password is incorrect (Yes, I have verified several times that I am typing the passord correct and am checking the case). There are well over 20 other servers here that I can SFTP with DWMX2004 without any problems, but the last 2 servers they built are the only 2 having problems. I have verified that all sshd_conf settings are exactly the same as the other servers, but to no avail.

I’m at a loss and am asking for help! Even the System Admin Manager has looked into it and can’t figure anything out. PLEASE HELP!!!

  1. This issue is still here in Dreamweaver CS3. Changing PasswordAuthentication to yes resolved the issue.

  2. Guys, thank you very much for the suggestion. I stumbled on this issue after upgradin my bsd box to version 6.2 and DW couldn’t connect. I thought it was the ssh version mismatch. Anyway now it works like before.

  3. We actually ended up loading a regular ftp server on the machines where this problem was occuring.

  4. Thanks for your response, Jason. I’m still looking for an answer, and if I find it, I’ll post here.

  5. I’m having the same problem, and was wondering what OS/version you guys have on the server? We are using Debian Sarge (3.1), with OpenSSH. We ended up setting up a regular ftp server as well because of this problem.

  6. We are using Debian 2.6.10-xenU with OpenSSH

  7. ssh -v results on the servers NOT working:
    OpenSSH_3.8.1p1 Debian-8.sarge.4, OpenSSL 0.9.7e 25 Oct 2004

ssh -v results on the servers working:
    OpenSSH_3.4p1 Debian 1:3.4p1-1.woody.3, SSH protocols 1.5/2.0, OpenSSL 0×0090603f

The problem persists in Dreamweaver 8.

  8. Upgrading to OpenSSH_4.2p1 doesn’t help. I’m guessing Sarge is the reason?

  9. We were experiencing the exact same problem with Sarge & Dreamweaver 8. Our Woody server works fine with 8. So, I checked the sshd_config file on Woody and the PasswordAuthentication line was commented out. So, I went to our Sarge server and put it in with yes. That worked fine after I restarted ssh. We just tested it on a second sarge box and it worked there too. Make sure root login is enabled if you are trying to use the root user (defalut yes on our sarge boxes). Hope this help.

  10. I tried the PasswordAuthentication = yes trick on Debian Sarge and it worked for me.

  11. I can confirm the info from Nate. After I cahnged it worked as well.

  12. Same problems/solution go for SuSE 9.2

  13. Same problem for Solaris 10 on Sparc (assume same on Solaris 10 for Intel)

    PasswordAuthentication = yes

    Anyone else with suggestions?

  14. Updating with 8.0.1 didnt’ work either, BTW.

    Next?

  15. Thanks! That PasswordAuthentication trick saved me a lot of time. This problem was driving me nuts!

  16. i was having the exact same problem with a freebsd-6.0 webserver and setting “PasswordAuthentication yes” did the trick.

    thx

  17. I was havint the same problem on my pcbsd (openbsd) server and I had to change the ssh_conf file to \”PasswordAuthentication yes\” and it worked.
