iPod Video G5 Hold Switch not holding

I noticed a few weeks ago that when I pulled my iPod out of my pocket, it was lit up as though it were being used, even though the hold switch was in the hold position. I sort of assumed that the hold switch itself was broken. But whenever I tried testing the stupid thing outside of my pocket, the hold switch worked just fine.

After a while, I realized that the real issue was not only completely unexpected, but completely bizzar as well. The hold stops working when you press on the screen! It’s like some kind of bizarre-o-world touch screen "feature" of sorts: As long as the hold switch is on, the scroll wheel doesn’t do a thing, but if the hold switch is on and I press on the screen then I can do whatever I want with the scroll wheel. LAME!! What’s the point of the hold button?

Is anyone else experiencing this? I can’t find it documented anywhere else, probably because just about any search with the word "ipod" in it gives innumerable results. I’ve had this G5 Video iPod for a little over a year and the symptoms started about 2 months ago.

  1. Hey, I have this problem too. And indeed, this seems due to a recent firmware update (can’t narrow down to which one, though). Does Apple own up to this problem?

  2. I have just started having this problem with 5G video ipod. Three people is a movement….

  3. I have a similar problem- engage hold and screen goes black like it should, take the hold off and screen activates sometimes playing a song and always battery quite drained. Kinda frustrating- am wondering if it’s a battery problem as my ipod is 1 1/2 yr old. anyone have this going on?

  4. Yep, same problem here, although not always reproducable. It seems a bit at random…

  5. Same thing here. The most recent thing is that the ipod will not turn on on occasion unless I flick the hold button back and forth quickly 3-4 times. It is very frustrating when the hold button is thwarted by screen pressure though.

  6. I have been experiencing this same issue on my 60GB video iPod…this sucks.

  7. i have experienced this exact problem but i fixed mine by simply hitting the side of the ipod off my hand about three or four times!!! i know it sounds crazy but the fault was driving me insane but since i did that i havent experienced the problem anymore.. seriously
